A Kh-101 cruise missile, originating from Russia, impacted directly on the Zaporizhzhia hydroelectric power plant in Ukraine. The attack on critical infrastructure raises tensions in the region.

In the video, it’s possible to observe the missile releasing flares in its final approach phase, a defensive tactic aimed at confusing and diverting heat-seeking anti-aircraft missiles, such as the well-known Stingers.

The DniproHES hydroelectric power plant, located in Zaporizhzhia, is not only a strategic target due to its energy capacity, but also represents a significant part of Ukrainian history. As the largest dam in the country, the structure was the scene of tragedies during World War II when its destruction by the retreating Red Army in 1941 resulted in catastrophic floods that claimed the lives of approximately 100,000 people.

The Kh-101 is designed to be launched from large aircraft, such as the strategic bombers Tu-95MS, Tu-160, and Tu-22M3, allowing these planes to stay out of the reach of enemy air defense systems. One notable feature of the Kh-101 is its stealth capability, meaning it’s less visible to enemy radars, thanks to its design and radar-absorbing materials.

The missile can be equipped with a variety of warheads, including conventional and possibly nuclear, making it a versatile weapon for different types of missions. It’s believed that the Kh-101 has a range of approximately 2,500 to 5,000 kilometers, depending on the payload and mission profile, allowing it to reach targets across much of Europe and the Middle East from Russian territory.
