The Royal Thai Army signed a new contract with the Chinese company NORINCO for the acquisition of additional VN1 8×8 armored vehicles during an official visit to Beijing on January 11.
The agreement expands an ongoing procurement program and strengthens the military partnership between the two countries in the wheeled armored vehicle sector.
Currently, Thailand has already received 111 units from the VN1 family, including troop transport, self-propelled mortar, command, recovery, and ambulance versions. These vehicles are part of Thailand’s efforts to modernize its fleet and replace platforms considered obsolete, as part of a gradual renewal plan for its mechanized forces.
The new contract adds to an expected investment of approximately $31 million for more units from the VN1 series. Additionally, the Army is considering a fourth phase of acquisition, which could include the 105 mm ST1 tank destroyer, designed to replace the old American-made V-150 vehicles still in service.
The negotiation was concluded on a government-to-government model and symbolizes Thailand’s growing dependence on Chinese systems for armored vehicles and land weapons. The agreement also highlights the consolidation of strategic cooperation between Bangkok and Beijing, especially in the areas of regional mobility, border security, and mechanized infantry modernization.
