Tensions at the Thailand-Cambodia border reached a new level this week, with both countries deploying advanced weaponry in clashes that have already caused dozens of casualties.

Thailand used its Ukrainian-made T-84 Oplot tanks for the first time in attacks on Cambodian positions near the Preah Vihear temple, a historically disputed area. Additionally, heavy attack drones were employed to drop unguided munitions, although one was lost due to possible technical failure or friendly fire.

The conflict escalated on Wednesday (24th) after artillery exchanges and airstrikes, including bombings carried out by Thai F-16 fighters. Both sides trade accusations: Thailand claims Cambodia initiated drone attacks and then invaded a military base near the Ta Muen Thom temple, while Cambodia denies this and blames Thailand for firing first.

Civilians have already been affected, with at least 12 deaths on Thai territory, including an attack on a gas station and a hospital.

The military disparity between the countries is clear. Thailand, with a defense budget nearly five times larger than Cambodia’s, has mobilized tanks, heavy artillery, and its air fleet, including modern Gripen fighters. Meanwhile, Cambodia, a close ally of China, responded with RM-70 rocket launchers and attacks on residential areas. The international community, including the UN and the ASEAN bloc, has called for restraint, but so far negotiations have been unsuccessful.

The conflict has roots in territorial disputes dating back to the colonial era, but the recent escalation began after a Cambodian soldier was killed in May. Analysts fear the situation may worsen, especially with Thailand threatening to “intensify self-defense” and Cambodia accusing its neighbor of “unprovoked aggression.”

Meanwhile, civilians near the border are fleeing the fighting, and hundreds of schools have been closed as a safety measure.
