The Thai Army confirmed a direct clash between armored vehicles with Cambodian forces along the shared border, after videos surfaced showing a Thai M48A5 tank firing at Cambodian T-55 tanks.
The footage indicates that at least one of the Cambodian vehicles was destroyed during the engagement.
According to Thai military sources, the combat occurred with the Thai tanks positioned on elevated ground, giving them a decisive tactical advantage in the confrontation. The incident took place before the implementation of a 72-hour ceasefire agreed upon on December 27 with mediation by ASEAN and diplomatic support from the United States and China.
The incident also highlights the use of outdated armored platforms by both countries. While Thailand continues to operate the modernized M48A5 Patton in limited roles, Cambodia maintains Soviet-era T-55 tanks in service—models that, despite their age, remain active in regional conflicts due to the lack of more modern replacements.
