Electric vehicle sales grew in Europe in the first months of 2025, despite a significant drop for Tesla.

While the electric vehicle market in the European Union, EFTA, and the UK saw a 31.4% increase in registrations, Tesla experienced a 42.6% reduction compared to the previous year. The American automaker sold 26,619 cars between January and February, down from 46,343 in the same period in 2024, losing ground to brands like BMW, MG, and Renault.

Despite Tesla’s decline, electric vehicles had the largest growth in the European automotive sector, even surpassing hybrids, which led the market last year. On the other hand, gasoline and diesel vehicles saw sharp declines, with drops of 21.9% and 27.5%, respectively. Conventional hybrids, which do not require external charging, increased by 17.6% and became the most sold category, surpassing combustion engine cars.

The market share of electric vehicles in Europe rose to 15.2%, while Tesla’s share in the segment fell from 21.6% to 10.3%. This expansion of EVs comes after a disappointing performance in 2024, when their sales dropped by 5.9% in the EU.

Despite the slight drop in the overall automotive market, the data indicates that the transition to electrification continues to move forward on the continent.
