Tesla launches cheaper Model Y with rear-wheel drive and greater range in the US (Tesla)
Tesla has launched a more affordable version of the Model Y in the United States. The model, called Long Range with rear-wheel drive, starts at $44,990, or $37,490 with the federal $7,500 tax credit.
This new version has only one motor, responsible for powering the rear axle, which results in slightly slower acceleration: 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, compared to 4.6 seconds for the dual-motor version. In return, the range on a full charge is greater, reaching 357 miles (574 km), compared to 326 miles (526 km) for the all-wheel-drive version.
Deliveries of the new Model Y are expected to begin in three to five weeks. Tesla is betting that this more affordable version will help boost its sales, especially after a weak quarter. However, the company is facing a decline in sales in Europe, despite this rear-wheel-drive version already being available there for a few weeks.
