A temporary bridge built after the devastating floods that hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, collapsed on January 2 after being struck by heavy rains.

The temporary bridge was swept away by the river in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, after heavy rains on January 2. It was constructed through the mobilization of residents, local government, and private sector efforts after the major flood that devastated the state in May 2024.

The structure was inaugurated in October 2024.

Authorities stated that in less than ten hours, the water advanced and covered the bridge in the morning. By the afternoon of that day, it began to show signs of damage and was completely destroyed by the early evening.

The bridge was made of nine reinforced metal containers and connected two sides of the same municipality and another nearby city.

“This does not only affect the mobility of the city, but the entire region. And I dare say, the state as well,” said Mayor Júnior Freiberger.

According to him, the water reached up to five meters in height.
