Taliban restores Mi-17, MD-530, and Cheetal helicopters and expands air fleet (X @MoDAfghanistan2)
Engineers from the Taliban Air Force managed to repair three helicopters, returning them to operation: two Mi-17 multi-role helicopters and one MD-530 light attack helicopter.
According to the Afghan Ministry of Defense, all the aircraft underwent the necessary technical tests and have already successfully completed their first flights after the repairs.
The group received these helicopters after taking power in the country in 2021, seizing them from the former Afghan Air Force. Additionally, the Taliban also recovered Indian Cheetal helicopters, transferred by India in 2014 as part of cooperation agreements. These aircraft are modernized versions of the HAL Cheetah, with more powerful and efficient engines than the original models.
In June, the Taliban managed to partially restore UH-60A Black Hawk helicopters that had been rendered inoperable by the U.S. military. By September 2021, the group had captured at least 16 of these helicopters and their simulators, in varying technical conditions, significantly expanding their air operational capacity.
