The Taiwan Army conducted an urban defense exercise in Hsinchu using M1A2T Abrams tanks, as part of battalion-level operational readiness training led by the 584th Armored Brigade.
The activity primarily focused on protecting strategic infrastructure in urban environments, considered essential in high-tension scenarios.
According to the Ministry of National Defense, the exercise assessed the troops’ ability to respond to battlefield changes by combining real troop movements, maneuvers on urban roads, and coordination between different types of armored vehicles. In addition to the Abrams, CM32, CM33, and CM34 vehicles, CM22 mortar carriers, and HMMWVs armed with TOW anti-tank missiles participated.
The operation also tested the mobility, command, and decision-making of officers, requiring real-time tactical adjustments. Considered one of the country’s main heavy units, the 584th Brigade is expected to operate the M1A2T as a replacement for older models, reinforcing the defense of critical targets, especially in northern Taiwan.
