Taiwan has officially incorporated the M1A2T Abrams tanks into its military force, forming the first battalion equipped with the vehicles during a ceremony held on October 31 by President Lai Tsing-de.

The leader emphasized that strengthening national defense is essential to maintaining peace, reaffirming Taiwan’s opposition to the “One Country, Two Systems” principle and to China’s pressure.

The new tanks were assigned to the third battalion of the 584th Armored Brigade, the unit responsible for defending the northern part of the island, including the beaches of Taoyuan and Zhubei. The brigade is subordinate to the 6th Army Corps and, with the arrival of the M1A2Ts, now includes the country’s first unit equipped with this modern model.

The M1A2T, a variant of the M1A2SEPv3 without depleted uranium armor, is gradually replacing the old CM-11 Brave Tiger and CM-12 tanks. Taiwan already received 38 units in 2024 and is expected to receive another 42 in 2025 and 28 in 2026, in addition to engineering vehicles and heavy tractors for logistical support.

The tanks will strengthen the defense of strategic points such as Kaohsiung, Tainan, port infrastructure, and areas near the capital Taipei.
