The Taiwanese Army has started equipping its M60 tanks and Yunpiao armored vehicles with protective nets designed to hinder drone attacks.
The new structures have already been used in the recent Hangguan 41 military exercises and include mesh over the armored vehicle turrets and dark covers on the tanks, making it harder for adversaries to identify vulnerable points.
Taiwan’s strategy follows the example set by Ukraine since 2022, which has widely installed improvised grids to counter aerial threats. The nets can trigger the premature detonation of grenades launched by drones or reduce their impact by creating a distance between the explosive and the vehicle’s armor. In some cases, the protection is even capable of completely preventing the grenade from hitting the hull.
The Yunpiao armored vehicles were locally developed to meet the needs of the Taiwanese Armed Forces, offering mobility, protection, and fire support. The manufacturing is done by the State Center for Weapon Readiness Development (ORDC), which is linked to Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense.
