The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has signed a contract to supply four new logistics support ships for the Royal Swedish Navy.

According to a press release issued by FMV and translated by Naval News, the contract was awarded to the Spanish shipbuilder Freire Shipyard, which is expected to deliver the vessels to the Swedish Armed Forces in 2030.

“The acquisition of the logistics support ships began in the summer of 2024, and with the signing of the contract we are now entering the production phase,” said Carl Johan Widmark, FMV Project Manager.

“The project strategy is to acquire a civilian vessel platform and subsequently integrate weapons as well as military command, control and communications (C3) systems at a separately selected shipyard responsible for the militarization.”

The logistics support ships are one of four new platform types included in the program currently being implemented by FMV to support the Swedish Armed Forces in developing their sea-based mobile logistics capability.

In addition to the logistics support vessels, the Royal Swedish Navy is also implementing the use of work vessels intended for torpedo recovery and underwater operations, as well as harbor vessels and bunker vessels.
