Sweden has indicated that it may provide JAS 39 Gripen fighters to Ukraine, but only after the war against Russia ends.
According to Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson, Kyiv has already shown interest in the aircraft, particularly the Gripen E version, which is also operated by Brazil. The minister emphasized that any negotiation would be part of a long-term plan to strengthen Ukraine’s air force.
Jonson noted that the delivery of the fighters will depend on the cessation of hostilities and that the cooperation should be part of a broader strategy to rebuild the country’s air force. He also reminded that Sweden has experience supporting other nations in this area, such as the Czech Republic, Hungary, Thailand, and Brazil.
In addition to the potential sale, Stockholm is also considering discussing the donation of Gripen C/D models. The topic was addressed in a recent meeting between the Swedish and Ukrainian defence ministers in Kyiv. Saab CEO Micael Johansson stated that delivering the most modern version of the fighters is feasible in the future but will depend on a political decision.
