The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has signed a contract with Finnish shipyard Marine Alutech to purchase 20 new landing boats, which will be allocated to the country’s amphibious battalions.
The vessels will replace older models, which were donated by Sweden to Ukraine, and are part of an investment of approximately 130 million Swedish kronor. The final delivery is expected by 2028.
Named Watercat M9, the boats will have the capacity to carry up to eight soldiers and two crew members, in addition to small loads. According to the FMV, the new boats have been designed to meet the operational demands of amphibious units, with a focus on simplicity, robustness, and speed in loading, unloading, and movement.
Improvements over the previous version include adjustments to increase maritime safety and adaptations to meet the needs of the new battalions. The first unit will be delivered as a pre-series model before full-scale production, reinforcing the modernization of Sweden’s amphibious fleet.
