Sweden has built a new underwater pier at its naval base in Karlskrona, capable of hosting vessels used in NATO missions.
The announcement was made by Martin Göth, a representative of the Karlskrona naval base, according to a report by SVT. The new pier took a year and a half to complete and was built using technologies adapted for modern submarines currently entering service with the Swedish Navy.
Göth noted that the facility will be able to accommodate not only Swedish ships but also vessels from NATO allies. “We are part of the alliance, and within that comes the mission of also being able to receive other naval systems,” he said.
Karlskrona has served as the main base of the Swedish Navy since its founding in 1680. Submarine forces have been based there for more than a century, beginning with Sweden’s first submarine, the Hajen, in the early 20th century. Today, the base is home to the 1st Submarine Flotilla of the Royal Swedish Navy.
