Chapman escaped from Bessemer City Jail, Alabama, on January 12. His freedom was cut short five days later, on Wednesday afternoon, when he was spotted at a Chevron gas station in Atlanta, driving a stolen black Infiniti Q50. According to the Atlanta Police Department, it is believed that Chapman stole the vehicle from a Planet Fitness parking lot shortly after his escape.

The Atlanta Aviation Unit, which tracked the suspect to the gas station, captured aerial footage of the moment Chapman entered the vehicle. When officers attempted to approach him, he fled, leading to an intense pursuit. The video shows Chapman abandoning the car at a convenience store and attempting to escape on foot.

The chase reached its climax when Chapman, in a desperate attempt to hide, jumped into a large blue recycling bin and closed the lid over himself. However, officers quickly discovered his hiding spot and removed the bin lid, resulting in the suspect’s arrest, who jumped in shock when confronted.

In addition to Chapman’s capture, a K-9 unit assisted the police in recovering a weapon that the suspect apparently tried to discard in another trash can during his escape. The police body camera video documented the entire dramatic sequence of the arrest.

Chapman’s arrest marks the end of an extensive and intense search, highlighting the persistence and effectiveness of the authorities involved in the operation.
