Supersonic XB-1 Jet Completes Final Test Flight, Paving the Way for the Overture (Instagram @boomsupersonic)
The XB-1 supersonic jet from Boom Supersonic completed its 13th and final test flight on February 10, 2025, breaking the sound barrier for the last time.
The goal of this test program was to pave the way for the development of the Overture, an aircraft three times larger than the XB-1.
During the tests, the aircraft exceeded the speed of sound on six occasions, including the final flight, where it reached the speed on three separate occasions.
The journey of the XB-1 began in March 2024, with subsonic flights before breaking the sound barrier for the first time in January 2025. This historic flight marked the debut of a civil aircraft surpassing the sound barrier in the United States.
Boom’s Chief Engineer, Nick Sheryka, emphasized that the startup achieved this feat without the support of governments or major aircraft manufacturers, which many considered impossible for an independent company.
Now, Boom Supersonic is preparing to focus on the development of the Overture, its next supersonic aircraft, capable of carrying between 64 and 80 passengers. The company aims to finalize the design and Symphony engines in the coming months and begin production of the Overture in approximately 18 months, with the first commercial flight scheduled by the end of 2029, seeking to revive commercial supersonic flights, a field previously dominated by the Concorde.
