Autonomous cars have proven to be safer than those driven by humans, according to a study by the University of Central Florida, except in three specific situations: when operating during dawn and dusk, where the risk of collision is five times higher; and when making turns, with double the accident rate compared to human drivers.
The researchers analyzed accident data from 2016 to 2022, comparing 2,100 incidents involving autonomous vehicles to 35,133 incidents involving traditional cars, taking into account factors such as weather, road conditions, and time of day.
The results indicated that in most scenarios, autonomous vehicles demonstrate higher safety, especially in rear-end or side collisions. These cars, already in use in cities like Shenzhen, Stockholm, and Los Angeles, offer additional benefits such as independence for the elderly, job creation, and improvements in areas where public transportation is insufficient.
However, experts warn that the data is still preliminary due to the limited number of accident records involving autonomous vehicles and potential biases from companies in the sector.
Despite these limitations, the study represents a step forward in understanding the safety of autonomous cars but emphasizes the need for more analysis to draw definitive conclusions.
