A study has revealed how many kilometers drivers will cover on average over the course of their lives, and the numbers are surprising.

The research, which involved 2,000 people, was commissioned by Honda as the Japanese brand prepares for the launch of the new Civic e:HEV.

According to the study, drivers who drive daily will, on average, cover the equivalent of 63 trips around the Earth over their lifetimes, totaling approximately 2.5 million kilometers.

The research also revealed other interesting data, including that drivers will own around five cars and fill up the tank 1,360 times before they die.

Most drivers will take two tests to obtain a driver’s license, while the average price for a first car is around US$ 4,000.

More than 20% of respondents kept the same vehicle for a decade or more, but the study emphasized that most drivers change cars every five years.

Many switch cars simply because they want something newer, while others prefer to change only when the car is no longer fit to drive.

“Cars are an important way to get around, so it’s crucial that we take good care of them,” explained Andrew Winfield, Head of Product and Business Planning at Honda Motor Europe Ltd.

“However, cars have evolved and become much more than just a way to get from A to Z — so it’s important to give them the care they need.”

When looking for a new car, 75% prioritize price, 56% look for comfort, and 35% are simply loyal to a brand. “We spend a lot of time in our cars and clearly cover a lot of ground, so it makes sense to make that time as enjoyable as possible,” Winfield added.
