American company BlackSea Technologies carried out an operational demonstration of the GARC, an unmanned military vessel developed for reconnaissance, surveillance, and maritime operations in high-risk areas.

According to a press release published by Naval News, the tests took place during exercises in northern Norway and focused on evaluating the system’s performance in extreme maritime environments, including cold waters, strong winds, and navigation in regions near the Arctic.

The Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft (GARC) is a high-speed unmanned surface vehicle (USV) capable of operating autonomously or by remote control. The vessel was designed to carry out intelligence missions, maritime monitoring, electronic warfare, and support for special operations.

According to the company, the system can carry different sensors and modular payloads, allowing rapid adaptation for multiple operational scenarios. During the demonstration in Norway, the GARC reportedly carried out autonomous navigation, target identification, and coordinated operations with other military platforms.

Arctic Sentry proves that the GARC can operate effectively in dynamic and contested maritime environments north of the Arctic Circle,” said Lunsford Schock, mission director at BlackSea Technologies.

“The exercise further strengthens our nation’s military partnerships with key European allies and reflects BlackSea’s commitment to preserving freedom of action at sea by providing scalable and intelligent tools for naval forces worldwide.”

Interest in unmanned vessels has grown rapidly in recent years following the extensive use of such systems in the Black Sea war, particularly in maritime attacks carried out by Ukraine against Russian ships since the beginning of the conflict.

Military analysts point out that USVs such as the GARC can reduce risks to human crews and expand monitoring capabilities in contested maritime areas, especially in the Arctic and the North Atlantic.
