The tank K1E1 upgrade project, involving an investment of 275 billion won (approximately $206 million), aims to modernize the existing fleet of K1/K1E1 tanks in the South Korean military inventory. The complete upgrade program is scheduled to continue until 2038, with the transition of all tanks to the K1E2 standard.

Key improvements from the K1E1 tank to the K1E2 model include the installation of a next-generation gunner sight system, an NBC protection system, air conditioning units, and an auxiliary power unit. These upgrades are designed to enhance combat capabilities, survivability, and operational efficiency of the tank.

Following extensive testing with prototype models, the upgraded K1E1 tanks will be officially redesignated as K1E2, with the transition scheduled to commence in 2026 through a phased upgrade process. Currently, there are 1,027 K1 variants in service.

The main battle tank K1 has been a cornerstone of South Korea’s defense since its introduction in 1987.
