After shifting its focus to launching larger cars, Smart is returning to its roots with the announcement of the #2, a two-seater mini car that will be the successor to the beloved ForTwo.

The new #2, internally called “Project Two,” is already in the final development phase, according to Smart. The launch is part of a trio of new vehicles set to debut starting in 2026, aiming to meet the “more diverse needs of customers.”

According to Smart, its new urban-focused car will be an electric vehicle “built on the rich heritage of the ForTwo.” The main market for the launch will be Europe, the company says.

The new #2 will be designed by the Mercedes-Benz design team but manufactured in China, using technology and engineering from Geely. Smart also stated that the new #2 “will feature new technologies for the segment.”

In a statement confirming the new successor to the ForTwo, Dirk Adelmann, CEO of Smart Europe, said the new car “will shape a new era of individual urban mobility, especially in classic smart cities like Rome, London, or Paris.”

“The decision comes at the right time as we benefit from the strengths of our main shareholders, Mercedes-Benz and Geely, and the strong support of new investors, along with the successful launch of the Smart #5 in the market,” he added.
