Scout Terra and Traveler: Electric SUVs and Pickup Trucks that Combine Retro Style and Off-Road Technology (Instagram @scout_motors)
Scout is reviving its brand with the launch of the Terra and Traveler, a pair of off-road vehicles that blend retro design with modern technology.
The pickup truck and SUV feature a body-on-frame structure and a solid rear axle, rare characteristics among electric vehicles, promising robustness for off-road adventures. Additionally, both will be available in fully electric or plug-in hybrid versions, alleviating range concerns and expanding appeal to different types of consumers.
With an electric motor on each axle, mechanical locking differential, and an 800-volt architecture, the electric models will offer impressive torque, estimated at 1000 lb-ft, and a range of up to 563 km. The plug-in hybrid versions, equipped with a gasoline engine as a range extender, are expected to offer over 800 km.
This versatility positions the Scout models as direct competitors to vehicles such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, Jeep Recon, Rivian R1T, and hybrids like the Jeep Wrangler 4xe.
Despite the backing of the Volkswagen Group, which has heavily invested in a factory in the U.S. to produce these models, Scout still faces uncertainties in its market trajectory. Production is expected to begin in 2027, with 2028 models set for release, and prices are expected to start under $60,000, making the Terra and Traveler competitive options for off-road enthusiasts.
