Saudi Arabia is considering the possibility of acquiring JF-17 Thunder fighter jets, developed in partnership by China and Pakistan, as part of a deal to offset Islamabad’s multi-billion dollar debts to Riyadh.
According to reports, negotiations involve the purchase of an undisclosed number of aircraft, in a package that could reach $6 billion. The proposal comes amid strengthening military cooperation between the two countries, following the signing of a mutual defense pact.
The JF-17 is a lightweight multi-role fighter that has undergone successive upgrades, now reaching the Block 3 version, equipped with an AESA radar, advanced flight control systems, and long-range air-to-air missiles. While it is considered more affordable and sustainable than Western models, the jet is less capable than options such as the F-35, F-15EX, Eurofighter Typhoon, and Rafale, all of which have already been linked to potential Saudi purchases. Still, Pakistan points out that the aircraft has been combat-tested and is gaining traction in international markets.
For Saudi Arabia, however, the proposal raises strategic questions. Operating the JF-17 alongside American-made fighters, especially the F-35, could raise concerns about technological security and sharing sensitive information with China. Moreover, analysts question the kingdom’s real need for a lower-performing fighter, considering its air force already operates one of the most modern fleets in the Middle East.
From the Pakistani side, arms exports are seen as essential to alleviate economic difficulties and reduce reliance on international organizations. Still, experts believe that, as with previous Saudi acquisitions, the political factor may outweigh the technical aspect in the final decision.
Thus, while the JF-17 represents a cheaper alternative, its adoption by the kingdom remains uncertain due to the diplomatic and strategic implications involved.
