SAIC-GM, the joint venture between GM Chevrolet and the Chinese company SAIC, presented a new car concept to celebrate its 28th anniversary.

It’s the GEN-Z Explorer, a three-door electric hatchback designed by the PATAC Design engineering and design center specifically for young Chinese people.

The idea for its minimalist design came from the concept of a “basic white sneaker,” popular among Generation Z, which allows for user customization—something that will also be present in the vehicle.

According to the brand, the central panel will function as a “blank canvas,” allowing the driver to create, express themselves, and store whatever they need.

To give it even more of a Generation Z vibe, the front and rear lights feature 2,000 micro-LEDs that enable the display of different colors, as well as real-time messages and emojis.

The rear cabin configurations can easily be changed by the user to fit their lifestyle. “The designer did only half of the design, and the other half is defined by the owner,” explained SAIC-GM.

Under the hood, the GEN-Z Explorer is equipped with four motors, one for each wheel, ensuring independent traction. This allows for a maximum power of 652 hp and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds.

It also comes equipped with a CTC (cell-to-chassis) battery, which has an energy density of 350 Wh/kg, promising a range of up to 1,200 km on a single charge. And speaking of charging, it supports fast charging on an 800V system.

While SAIC-GM has not revealed a launch date for the car concept, it is speculated that the GEN-Z Explorer will be part of Buick’s new Electra brand, which will be launched in April exclusively in China, according to the website CarNewsChina.
