Saab has received a contract of approximately $286 million from the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) to continue conceptual studies of future fighter systems between 2025 and 2027.
The work will involve both manned and unmanned aircraft, combining technological development and demonstrator programs, in collaboration with FMV, the Swedish Armed Forces, FOI, GKN Aerospace, and other national partners.
The new contract expands on a previous 2024 agreement and aims to develop technologies and operational concepts that could form the basis for future air platforms in Sweden and partner countries. According to Saab, the program represents a strategic step to provide innovative solutions that meet future defense needs.
Sweden has a long tradition of producing its own fighter jets, such as the Viggen and Gripen, tailored to the country’s geography, limited resources, and export goals. Saab’s future fighter program adopts a connected ecosystem approach, involving manned jets, autonomous drones, and integrated systems, initiating a new cycle of design and experimentation for Swedish air defense.
