Boeing has once again postponed the launch of the 777X model. Initially scheduled for 2020, the jet is now expected to be launched only in 2027.
The information was released by Bloomberg, which revealed that Deutsche Lufthansa, the German airline that will debut the jet, has already postponed its plans to add the aircraft to its fleet, as has Emirates, the largest 777X customer.
The first commercial flight of the jet was originally planned for 2020. According to Kelly Ortberg, CEO of Boeing, the delay occurred due to a “mountain of work” and was not caused by technical issues with the aircraft.
“Even a small delay in the 777 program schedule has a fairly large financial impact because we are in a loss situation. So, we are taking this very seriously,” he said at a Morgan Stanley conference last month.
According to Boeing, the 777X will be the “largest and most efficient twin-engine jet in the world, unmatched in every aspect of performance.” The jet is expected to help expand commercial aircraft fleets in India and South Asia.
“The India and South Asia region continues to be the fastest-growing commercial aviation market in the world,” said Ashwin Naidu, Managing Director of Commercial Marketing at Boeing for India and South Asia.
“People will have greater access to air travel, and airlines in the region will need a modern, fuel-efficient fleet to meet the increasing demand over the next two decades.”
