A Su-30SM fighter jet of the Russian Aerospace Forces crashed on Thursday in the Republic of Karelia, a region in the northwest of the country. The accident occurred in the Prionezhsky district, near the city of Petrozavodsk.

According to information released by Russian Telegram channels SHOT and 112, the military jet crashed in a forested area near the local airport. The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that both crew members on board died on impact.

The aircraft belonged to the 159th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, a unit of the Russian Aerospace Forces based at the Besovets airfield on the outskirts of Petrozavodsk.

The regiment is part of the 105th Mixed Aviation Division of the 6th Army of Aerospace Forces and Air Defense, under Russia’s Western Military District. The unit is equipped with Su-27 and Su-30SM fighters, used for air defense missions and advanced training.
