The discovery of a Russian-origin drone near Poland’s border with the Kaliningrad enclave has led local authorities to open a new investigation into violations of the country’s airspace.
The wreckage was found in a field in the Warmia-Masuria region, located just a few kilometres from Russian territory.
Polish investigators believe the unmanned aircraft illegally crossed the border before crashing in an agricultural area. According to information released by local media, the equipment had Russian markings and was fitted with cameras, indicating possible use in reconnaissance missions.
After the drone debris was located, explosives specialists, firefighters and military police officers were sent to the site. Authorities confirmed that the aircraft was not carrying weapons and did not pose an immediate risk, although the case has increased concerns over air security in the region.
The episode adds to other recent incidents involving foreign drones on Polish territory. In recent years, Poland has recorded airspace incursions linked both to the war in Ukraine and to illegal smuggling operations from Belarus, reinforcing the challenges of monitoring the country’s borders.
