Russia is helping North Korea create its own production line for the Shahed-136 kamikaze drones, of Iranian origin and used in attacks against Ukraine.

According to Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, agreements have already been made to build factories on North Korean territory, including the transfer of technology and knowledge to manufacture the Russian versions of these drones, called Garpiya and Geran-2.

Currently, Russia produces about 2,000 Shahed drones per month and plans to increase that number to 5,000. These drones have undergone constant improvements in range, payload capacity, and attack systems. It is expected that with production in North Korea, the Asian country will gain the capability to strike any region of South Korea and also supply drones to support Russian efforts in the war against Ukraine.

Additionally, Russia has expanded its local production with a new factory in Izhevsk, operated by the state company Almaz-Antey. The models produced there are identified as Garpiya-A1.

Ukrainian experts have also noted an increase in the use of Chinese electronics in these drones’ systems, which reinforces the international cooperation network involved in the manufacturing and use of these weapons.
