Modernized variant enhances combat capabilities and marks a new stage in the advanced training program
The Yak-130M training and combat aircraft was presented for the first time outside Russia during the Dubai Airshow 2025. The new variant, developed by “Yakovlev” of the United Aircraft Corporation, in partnership with Rosoboronexport — both part of the Russian state conglomerate Rostec — represents the most advanced evolution of the renowned Yak-130, in serial production since 2009.
Recognized as the world’s first new-generation training and combat aircraft, the Yak-130 enables the preparation of pilots destined for 4+ and 5th-generation fighters in a modern, highly complex training environment. The aircraft is already operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces and by air forces in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Russian pilots have set nine world records using the aircraft.

Modernization based on real combat experience
According to the developer, the Yak-130M was designed based on assessments of recent conflicts, incorporating lessons from air operations in both local and regional scenarios. A key pillar of the upgrade is enhancing combat capabilities while maintaining its primary training function.

The new model received significant improvements, including:
- installation of an onboard radar;
- electro-optical targeting system;
- airborne defense suite in a podded configuration;
- new communications package;
- latest-generation guided and unguided air weapons.
These upgrades allow the Yak-130M to perform combat and navigation missions under any weather conditions, day or night, achieving performance comparable to modern combat aviation platforms. Its roles include destroying ground and aerial targets, including large drones.
Two prototypes ready for testing
The Yak-130 program’s deputy chief designer, Dmitry Popov, highlighted that the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, a branch of PJSC “Yakovlev”, has already completed the construction of the first two Yak-130M prototypes. Both are currently undergoing preparation for ground testing and for their maiden flight.

Program outlook
With its international debut at the Dubai Airshow 2025, the Yak-130M officially enters Russia’s export portfolio in a strategic category: advanced training aircraft with genuine combat capability. The modernization aims to meet growing global demand for multifunctional platforms, especially in countries seeking lower operational costs without sacrificing relevant combat capabilities.
