Russia speeds up production of the Malva self-propelled gun amid war in Ukraine (X @YepAdam_)
Russia is ramping up production of the 2S43 Malva self-propelled guns, as shown in images released in February, which show at least eight units being transported by train.
Developed by the Burevestnik Institute in the 2010s and tested starting in 2020, the system was created under the Nabrosok project. It uses the BAZ-6910 chassis, also used in the 2S44 Giatsint-K, with which it shares many components.
The design of the Malva prioritizes lightness and mobility by forgoing additional armor and a turret, making it about 25% lighter than the Msta-S. With a load of 30 shells, the vehicle weighs 32 tons. Instead of the 2A64 howitzer, it is equipped with the 2A36 Giatsint-B cannon, allowing it to hit targets up to 30.5 km with standard ammunition and up to 33.1 km with long-range projectiles.
Thanks to the use of a wheeled chassis and a simplified design, the Malva can be produced more quickly and on a larger scale compared to tracked models.
However, these vehicles remain vulnerable targets: in December of the previous year, a rare Malva unit was destroyed by two FPV drones from the Flying Skull unit.
