Russia is reportedly trying to repurchase from Turkey the S-400 air defense systems that Ankara acquired in 2017 for $2.5 billion and received in 2019.

The reason is said to be the shortage of these systems in the Russian arsenal and high international demand, at a time when Moscow is facing losses on the front and needs to replenish its stock.
The systems, which were never integrated into NATO’s structure, have already reached half of their missile lifespan and require costly maintenance. Meanwhile, Turkey is advancing the development of its own defense system, Çelik Kubbe, and seeking to ease U.S. sanctions imposed after the purchase of the S-400, which resulted in the country’s exclusion from the F-35 fighter program.
Although Ankara has not yet officially confirmed interest in the negotiations, sources point to a favorable stance toward the Russian proposal. At the same time, Russia has once again postponed the delivery of new S-400 systems to India, pushing the deadlines to 2026 and 2027 due to its own military needs.
