Russia has already begun preparations to start production of a new version of the T-90 tank, known as the T-90M2 Ryvok-1.
The information was released by the analytical project Frontelligence Insight, which gained access to leaked documents from the Uralvagonzavod Scientific and Production Corporation.
These documents detail the increase in production and modernization of main battle tanks over the next decade, focusing on the T-90M family and upgrades to older T-72 models.
The project named the new variant T-90M2 and linked it to an internal project label, OKR Ryvok-1. According to Frontelligence Insight, the new T-90M2 is expected to enter limited production in 2026.
“Records indicate that by 2028, production of the T-90M and its new variant, the T-90M2, is expected to increase by almost 80% compared to 2024 levels,” said Frontelligence Insight.
“However, Russia’s long-term production plan points to much more ambitious goals: between 2026 and 2036, Moscow intends to build at least 1,783 T-90M and T-90M2 tanks, with 1,118 of them scheduled to be completed during the three-year period from 2027 to 2029,” the report said.
On the other hand, the documents also describe a planned modernization program for older vehicles. According to these records, Moscow intends to modernize hundreds of T-72 tanks.
The project’s files estimate that by 2036, about 828 T-72 tanks will receive the T-72B3M modification, with the modernization peak expected around 2028.
Combining the production targets, the documents raise the total number of new and modernized battle tanks to approximately 2,611 units for the period between 2026 and 2036, in addition to vehicles produced in 2024 and 2025, according to Frontelligence Insight.
