In Russia, the first “Bars-Sarmat” flight detachment has been created, using light aircraft to intercept long-range Ukrainian drones in the rear.
According to Russian blogger Ilya Tumanov, author of the aviation channel Fighterbomber, the Bars-Sarmat Special Purpose Center of the Russian Armed Forces has already deployed an initial link of six interceptors, purchased or donated by benefactors. The unit is expected to expand, with negotiations underway to add more aircraft.
Russian aviators are equipping the formation with Soviet sports and training aircraft Yak-18T and Yak-52. In a video released, a gunner armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle could be seen positioned behind the pilot in a Yak-52.

According to the publication, the group managed to gather technicians, pilots, spare engines, and additional parts to keep the planes operational. The initiative follows a tactic similar to that of Ukrainian forces, which began using Yak-52 sports planes to shoot down reconnaissance drones and Shaheds near major cities.
The Yak-52 has a low stall speed, between 100 and 140 km/h, making it easier to pursue and maneuver against drones at reduced speeds. Its maximum speed of 470 km/h and flight endurance of up to 2.5 hours allow for extended patrols and responses to massive enemy drone attacks.
It is assumed that the crews of these improvised interceptors operate in coordination with Russian air defense forces, which have radars and can assist in detecting and guiding the pilots.
The adaptation of these aircraft with onboard sensors is also being considered. In May, it was revealed that one Russian design bureau had integrated an optoelectronic module and light weapons into a Soviet Yak-52.
