The Royal Navy closely followed the Russian submarine Krasnodar, of the Kilo class, as it crossed the English Channel on its way to Russia, after a mission in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The patrol was conducted by HMS Tyne, with support from a Wildcat helicopter and the RFA Tideforce ship, as part of a NATO operation to monitor Russia’s naval movements in the region.

After escorting the Krasnodar out of British waters, HMS Tyne was redirected to track the Russian corvette Boikiy, coming from the Baltic Sea, and later followed its return along with three Russian merchant vessels.

This action reinforces the active role of the Royal Navy in maritime surveillance and in fulfilling NATO security commitments.

These operations take place amid an increase in the UK’s defense investment, with a promise to raise spending to 2.5% of GDP. HMS Tyne, which recently returned to active duty after maintenance, now operates with HMS Mersey and HMS Severn as part of efforts to protect British sovereignty and the region’s Euro-Atlantic strategic infrastructure.
