A drone from the Royal Air Force carried out a precision airstrike near the Syrian city of Aleppo on September 4, 2025, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
The action was part of Operation Shader, the UK’s contribution to the international coalition against the extremist group Daesh in Iraq and Syria.
During a reconnaissance mission, the drone crew identified a Daesh militant entering a vehicle. After confirming there were no civilians in the area, the aircraft launched an attack that destroyed the vehicle and resulted in the death of the target. The UK government emphasized that the operation is part of ongoing efforts to support regional partners and prevent the resurgence of the terrorist organization.
The strike was conducted by a RAF Reaper drone, which was officially retired at the end of September after 18 years of service. Introduced in 2007, the model accumulated over 173,000 flight hours on missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, and is now being replaced by the MQ-9B Protector RG Mk1, a more modern version with greater range and the ability to operate in civilian airspace.
