HII announced that the prototype of the unmanned surface vessel ROMULUS has reached about 30% completion in its construction phase.

The project is on schedule and is expected to begin sea trials in the last quarter of 2026, reinforcing the company’s plans to expand its capabilities in autonomous naval systems.

The hull of the prototype is being built at Breaux Brothers Enterprises in Louisiana, where progress has already been made in structural fabrication, equipment installation, and the integration of the Odyssey autonomous control system. According to HII, this technology forms the foundation of the ROMULUS autonomy architecture and allows for extended operations, coordination between multiple platforms, and rapid integration of new systems.

Developed as a modular family with artificial intelligence support, the ROMULUS is designed for missions such as intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, mine countermeasures, and support for naval operations.

The program is also attracting international interest, including from the United Kingdom, where Babcock is evaluating the integration of the vessel into the Royal Navy’s future autonomous and hybrid fleet concepts.
