The Romanian Ministry of Defense announced the arrival of three F-16AM fighters acquired from Norway at Borcea Air Base, home of the 86th Military Division. The aircraft are part of the modernization program aimed at strengthening the country’s air combat capabilities.

With this new delivery, the number of fighters already received rises to 21 out of the 32 planned under the contract signed in November 2021, valued at 388 million euros. In addition to the aircraft, the deal includes equipment, spare parts, logistical support, and pilot training. The remaining 11 units are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2025.

All F-16s are being upgraded to the M6.5.2 standard, in line with Romania’s and NATO’s operational requirements. This upgrade improves compatibility for joint operations and enhances mission flexibility.

The aircraft were originally developed from Block 15 airframes and underwent NATO’s Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) program, receiving advanced mission computers, Link 16 datalink, modernized radars, and more ergonomic cockpits.

The gradual incorporation of the F-16s marks a new phase in the Romanian Air Force’s modernization strategy, which began with the purchase of 17 aircraft from Portugal between 2016 and 2021.
With the completion of the contract with Norway, the Romanian fleet will total 49 F-16AM/BM aircraft, distributed across three squadrons, replacing the Soviet-made MiG-21 LanceR jets, which were retired in May 2023.

These fighters will remain the backbone of Romania’s air defense until fifth-generation platforms enter service.

The F-16AM/BM fighters are equipped with Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-220 engines, delivering 10,886 kg of thrust with afterburner. Although they do not match the capabilities of the modern F-16V, these models provide high mission effectiveness, with the ability to employ weapons such as AIM-120 AMRAAM, AIM-9 Sidewinder, AGM-65 Maverick, and JDAM guided bombs.
