Modernization and NATO Standard

The aircraft were originally developed from Block 15 airframes and underwent NATO’s Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) program, receiving advanced mission computers, Link 16 datalink, modernized radars, and more ergonomic cockpits.
Replacement of MiG-21s
The gradual incorporation of the F-16s marks a new phase in the Romanian Air Force’s modernization strategy, which began with the purchase of 17 aircraft from Portugal between 2016 and 2021.
With the completion of the contract with Norway, the Romanian fleet will total 49 F-16AM/BM aircraft, distributed across three squadrons, replacing the Soviet-made MiG-21 LanceR jets, which were retired in May 2023.

Technical Capabilities
The F-16AM/BM fighters are equipped with Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-220 engines, delivering 10,886 kg of thrust with afterburner. Although they do not match the capabilities of the modern F-16V, these models provide high mission effectiveness, with the ability to employ weapons such as AIM-120 AMRAAM, AIM-9 Sidewinder, AGM-65 Maverick, and JDAM guided bombs.
