The government of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has announced the delivery of 758 new vehicles to the Military Police, along with the acquisition of an armored Black Hawk helicopter, which will be used later this year in urban operations.

This aircraft, known for its use in war zones, has greater capacity and armor compared to the models currently used by the Military Police, such as the AW-169 and H-125, offering more protection and versatility.

The Black Hawk helicopter, UH-60 model, has been widely used by the United States Armed Forces since the 1970s and has participated in several international conflicts. In Brazil, 26 units are operated by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The model can transport up to 11 soldiers in addition to four crew members and can reach speeds of nearly 300 km/h, with a range of approximately 590 km.

The decision to use this type of aircraft in urban areas is related to the recent easing by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) of the so-called “ADPF of the Favelas,” which previously restricted the use of helicopters as shooting platforms in communities.

Despite criticism from NGOs about the impact on the population, the government argues that the use of more robust equipment is necessary to strengthen public security operations.
