German defense giant Rheinmetall has opened its first factory in Ukraine for the production of advanced armored vehicles, with a second facility already nearing completion.

In an interview with TSN, Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger highlighted that the first batch of the Lynx Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) is expected to be delivered by the end of the year.
With this expansion, Rheinmetall is also advancing plans to construct additional facilities in Ukraine, including an ammunition factory and a specialized plant for the production of gunpowder, signaling the company’s commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
The Lynx IFV, first launched in 2016, is one of Rheinmetall’s key combat vehicles, designed to withstand adverse combat conditions while providing flexibility for various missions.
The Lynx is available in two main configurations: the KF31 model, weighing up to 38 tons with a 755-horsepower engine, reaching speeds of up to 65 km/h; and the KF41 variant, which can weigh up to 50 tons and features a 1,140-horsepower engine, reaching 70 km/h.

Highlights of the Lynx include advanced protection features. The IFV is constructed with ballistic steel armor and double hull reinforcement, reducing the impact of explosions.
Its modular armor incorporates metal and ceramic components, capable of resisting 25 mm penetrating projectiles at distances of up to 500 meters.
The hull design also protects the crew against blasts of up to 10 kg of TNT, with the possibility of integrating an Active Protection System (APS) to deal with anti-tank threats.
The Lynx design prioritizes crew safety by keeping ammunition separate from the personnel compartment to minimize risks in case of armor penetration. The vehicle’s spacious interior ensures that even with damage to one section, the entire crew remains effectively protected.

Furthermore, the Lynx’s modular architecture allows for specialized versions to be configured for various combat and support roles, facilitating training and simplifying operational logistics.
