The slow pace of negotiations between Greece and Lockheed Martin for the modernization of its 38 F-16C/D Block 50 fighters has reportedly forced the country to order more F-35A Lightning II stealth fighters, in addition to the 20 already ordered in 2024.

The modernization of the F-16C/D Block 50 is expected to take place between 2031 and 2032, delivering a relatively outdated version that is not optimized to operate with the F-35A and Rafale, according to Ekathimerini and Greek Reporter.

Ekathimerini reported that “the possibility of activating the option to acquire 8 to 12 additional F-35s after 2030, instead of upgrading the 38 F-16 Block 50 to Block 52 standard, is now being closely considered.”

According to Opex360, the 83-84 F-16 Block 52/52+, currently undergoing modernization to the F-16V Viper Block 72 standard, would be better suited for this role.

Greece signed an Acceptance Letter on July 25, 2024, for the acquisition of 20 F-35A Lightning II fighters from Lockheed Martin through the U.S. FMS channel, in a deal worth $3.5 billion.

The Letter included an option for 20 more aircraft, a possibility that Greek authorities are considering, according to reports. No final decision has been announced, as other sources state that negotiations are in the final stage.

The Hellenic Air Force’s (HAF) F-16V Vipers will feature an AESA APG-83 radar, modular mission computer, enhanced avionics, automatic ground collision avoidance system, and upgraded cockpit displays and controls.

According to Lockheed Martin’s Vice President of Strategy and Business Development, these changes would make “Greece’s F-16V fleet one of the most advanced in Europe.”

The Hellenic Aerospace Industry (EAB) would collaborate with Lockheed Martin in the process of modernizing the F-16 Block 52/52+.
