The RCH 155 self-propelled howitzer can now be considered “combat-proven”, according to Nicholas Drummond, a consultant for the German division of KNDS.

Although he did not reveal where the system was used, the statement indicates that the equipment has already gone through real operations. Currently, Ukraine is the only country operating the model, reinforcing the possibility that the experience took place during the conflict in the country.

The development of the RCH 155 intended for Ukrainian forces went through successive adjustments before delivery. KNDS postponed the supply schedule to incorporate improvements based on feedback obtained from the operational use by Ukrainian troops. Kyiv’s interest in the system emerged in 2022, initially with an order for 18 units, which was later expanded to 54 howitzers.

Built on the chassis of the GTK Boxer 8×8 armored vehicle, the RCH 155 uses the automated AGM artillery module, derived from the well-established PzH 2000. The design eliminates the need for operators inside the turret, allowing the vehicle to be operated by just two service members, in addition to carrying up to 30 rounds ready for use.

With a combat weight of 39 tonnes and an 815-horsepower MTU diesel engine, the RCH 155 can hit targets up to 40 kilometers away, a range that increases to 52 kilometers with V-LAP ammunition. The system is also compatible with long-range guided projectiles, such as the VULCANO and EXCALIBUR models, expanding its precision-strike capability.
