The United Kingdom has announced the deployment of Typhoon fighter jets from the Royal Air Force to Poland as part of NATO’s Operation Eastern Sentry, in response to Russian drone incursions into the Alliance’s airspace.

The aircraft will operate from the United Kingdom, with in-flight refueling support, and will join fighter jets from other NATO countries to protect the eastern flank, a move that marks a significant reinforcement since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.

This step follows the violation of Polish airspace by 19 Gerbera drones and one Geran-2 drone detected in Romania, possibly indicating a Russian attempt to test NATO’s unity.

The Typhoon is considered ideal for the mission due to its air superiority capability and the use of the MBDA Meteor missile, which has long range and makes it effective against aircraft and missiles. To date, fighter jets from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands have already participated in air patrols, complementing NATO’s efforts to deter further incursions and ensure the security of allied airspace.

UK officials emphasize that the presence of the Typhoons is not only a show of strength but also a strategic action to protect allies and strengthen NATO’s response capabilities.

In addition to Poland, Romania has recorded only one possible accidental drone incursion, while the Czech Republic has announced the deployment of Mi-17 helicopters and special forces troops to support the downing of low-altitude drones. The strategy of using helicopters follows practices adopted by Ukraine and Israel, offering a more cost-effective solution for neutralizing hostile drones.

Analysts note that these actions reflect NATO’s efforts to maintain unity and respond efficiently to Russian provocations, ensuring the defense of the Alliance’s eastern flank.
