A survey of 1,000 drivers who play racing video games revealed that nearly half believe they have become better drivers in real life due to practicing on virtual tracks.

The survey indicated that 48% of respondents consider themselves more skilled than those who don’t play, with half of them reporting improvements in reaction time and overall safety.

Additionally, 50% stated that gaming experiences helped them pass driving tests more quickly. Participants also noted increased situational awareness and the ability to spot hazards while driving.

A spokesperson for Hyundai, which commissioned the study to highlight the audio technology of its new electric car, the IONIQ 5 N, observed that fun and functionality should be priorities in automotive design.

The study further indicated that almost two-thirds of drivers see similarities between racing games and real driving, although only a quarter believe the sound in games comes close to the real experience. For more than three-quarters of gamers, sound is considered a crucial element, with 30% ranking it as the most important aspect of the driving experience.
