The South African police fleet has received a significant boost with the delivery of 50 new Volkswagen Golf GTIs.
The Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS) is now equipped with these cars, which are based on the previous version of the model, as the new Mk 8.5 version was recently launched.
To ensure that officers can handle these powerful vehicles properly, the DMPS plans to implement advanced driving training courses. The need for this training was highlighted in a social media response, where the police committed to equipping officers with the necessary skills to use these cars responsibly, ensuring their safety and that of the public.
In addition to the Golf GTIs, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, also acquired 22 “hot hatches” earlier this year. The Golf GTI was chosen because it is a practical and relatively affordable car that still offers good performance for chasing high-speed drivers or transporting suspects.
In South Africa, the price of the Golf GTI starts at around $47,500, and the available version is only automatic, as VW has phased out the manual transmission worldwide.
