On the night of September 10, Poland experienced one of the most critical episodes since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
Russian drones violated Polish airspace during a massive attack against Ukrainian targets, forcing Warsaw to scramble fighters and launch a military operation to intercept and neutralize them.
The Operational Command of the Armed Forces declared that the incident was an “unprecedented violation of Polish airspace” and classified the action as “an act of aggression that directly threatens the safety of citizens.”
According to Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the Territorial Defense Forces are already on the ground searching for fragments of the downed UAVs. He urged civilians to avoid contact with the wreckage and immediately call the police if they find any.
Government reaction and airspace closure
Prime Minister Donald Tusk publicly confirmed the air invasion and the downing of the drones. In response, Poland partially closed its airspace, affecting strategic airports such as Rzeszów (the main international military support hub for Ukraine), as well as Lublin and Warsaw.
Air traffic was interrupted “due to unplanned military activities, to ensure state security.” F-35 fighters and refueling aircraft were detected by FlightRadar24 patrolling Polish skies, a clear demonstration of defensive readiness.
Earlier that night, Ukrainian monitoring channels had already warned that several Russian drones were heading toward Poland. The incident further heightens tensions between Moscow, Kyiv, and NATO, which views it as a dangerous escalation of the conflict.
