Poland has chosen the Swedish offer of A26 submarines from Saab to replace its aging Kilo-class fleet, marking a significant step in the country’s naval modernization.

Although the agreement has not yet been formalized, the proposal includes technology transfer and a strategic partnership with the Polish industry, strengthening military and industrial ties between Warsaw and Stockholm.

The A26 submarines, currently under construction in Sweden, represent one of the most modern platforms in the world, with long submerged endurance thanks to the Stirling AIP system and capacity for up to 35 crew members.

Scheduled deliveries between 2031 and 2033 demonstrate the program’s maturity, which is already producing two Blekinge-class models for the Swedish Navy.

The Polish choice comes after a competition involving companies from Germany, Italy, France, Spain, and South Korea. With its fleet reduced to the single, possibly inoperative ORP Orzel, the decision for a solution adapted to the Baltic Sea aims to restore Poland’s submarine capability and accelerate its military modernization.
