Poland has signed a new contract for the acquisition of 146 Borsuk infantry fighting vehicles, expanding one of Europe’s largest land forces modernization programs.

According to the website Defence Blog, the agreement, valued at around 7.5 billion zlotys, approximately US$2 billion, was signed between Poland’s Armaments Agency and a consortium led by the state-owned defense group PGZ and manufacturer Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW).

Deliveries are expected to be completed by 2030. With the new order, the total number of Borsuk vehicles ordered by the country rises to 257 units, adding to the previous contract for 111 vehicles signed in 2025. According to Polish officials, the quantity will be enough to equip four mechanized battalions, as well as units intended for training and reserve.

Developed in Poland, the Borsuk was created to replace the older Soviet-origin BMP-1 vehicles still in operation. The vehicle is equipped with the remotely operated ZSSW-30 turret, armed with a 30 mm Bushmaster automatic cannon and Spike anti-tank missiles. In addition, the vehicle also has amphibious capability, allowing operations both on land and in water.

The new contract is part of a broader plan to strengthen the Polish Armed Forces, driven by increased security tensions in Eastern Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Borsuk program is expected to reach more than one thousand vehicles in different versions over the coming years.
