Poland has officially confirmed the integration of the AIM-9X Sidewinder missile into the future FA-50PL, strengthening the aircraft’s role in air policing missions on NATO’s eastern flank.

The agreement with the United States ensures technical support to incorporate the most modern short-range air-to-air missile in the U.S. arsenal, already used by Polish F-16 and F-35 fighters. The move also paves the way for the future integration of the AIM-120 AMRAAM, further expanding the light fighter’s air-to-air capabilities.

While modernization advances, the program has faced a setback: deliveries of the FA-50PL have been delayed by nearly two years. The revised schedule now foresees the arrival of the first aircraft only in mid-2027, with completion of the 36-unit order in early 2029. The delay is attributed to supply chain difficulties, the integration of advanced systems, and the geopolitical context.

The difference between the jet variants is significant. The 12 FA-50GF aircraft currently in service act as an interim solution and operate with older weaponry. The FA-50PL, by contrast, will feature the PhantomStrike AESA radar, an in-flight refueling probe, Sniper targeting pod, helmet-mounted display, laser-guided bombs, and the AIM-9X and AIM-120 missiles, making it much closer to a modern multirole fighter.

The acquisition of the FA-50 is part of a broad modernization effort accelerated after the war in Ukraine. Poland is replacing its MiG-29 and Su-22 fleets with a force based on the F-35A, upgraded F-16s, and the FA-50. Despite the delays, the country remains committed to consolidating an air force standardized in weaponry and fully compatible with NATO standards.
